A Tour of Dave Fernelius' Shop
Seeing other shop photos updated, it reminded me that a woodshop is continually evolving and changing as one’s need’s change and new tools are acquired. My shop, too, has changed since my original post and I’ve added to my tool inventory. So, I thought I’d share the latest incarnation of my shop with fellow woodworkers.
The photos are generally in a counterclockwise arrangement, beginning inside the door to the shop. The shop is “L” shaped, approximately 10' x 12' and 10' x 16'. Not, too big, really, but functional for me (of course, who wouldn’t love more space!) The shop is located in one end of my basement and the usual issues with basement shops come into play—minimal natural light and ventilation (a small operable window and a set of glass blocks) and lower head room (just under 7' clear.)
Facing east, looking at shop entry door. Bench grinder at left. My dovetailing jig (not fixed in this position, just happens to be sitting on the bench.
Looking east, dovetailing jig (not mounted to the bench, just taking up space on a bench at the moment), bench grinder, small vise. Wall mounted shelving.
Again, facing east, backed up slightly. New tool added this year—DeWalt Sliding Compound Miter Saw! It’s great!
Looking northeast. SCMS, bench.
Basically looking north. SCMS, dust collector (650 CFM Jet ducted to miter saw and table saw).
Looking west; Jet dedicated mortiser, Delta drill press, (these tools are fixed to the bench), and a Delta scroll saw (like the dove tail jig, it isn’t mounted to the bench, it just happens to be sitting here in this photo). Under the bench is tool storage. Open shelf storage on the wall.
Looking northwest. Dust collector, bench drill press.
Detail shot of dust collector.
Looking basically south. Table saw outfeed—clamp storage in background.
Again, south. Table saw outfeed, dedicated Jet mortiser.
Looking north, from infeed side of table saw.
New addition in 2007!!!! Jet 10" cabinet saw. Replaced my Delta contractors saw. I’m sold on Jet tools. This saw, in my opinion, is the best in this price range. Bought it without the fence. Used my Vega fence that I had added to the Delta several years ago. I think the Vega fences are on par with other cabinet saw fences.
Looking north. Table saw and outfeed—dust collector.
Looking south again. Table saw outfeed, air compressor, and rolling work cart below outfeed table, old Sears lathe in the background. Probably the lowest quality tool in my collection. I don’t do much turning, though, so it works okay for my needs.
Lathe, tool storage.
Clamp storage, rolling trash bin.
Overall shot as best I could get, looking southwest. Table saw, outfeed table, mortiser, air compressor, Jet air filtering unit.
Thanks for taking the time to “tour” my shop.
